Dental Crowns
What is a Dental Crown?
A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
Although there are several types of crowns, our office primarily uses zirconia crowns which is made from zirconium dioxide, which is one of the strongest and most durable materials used in dentistry. Unlike PFM crowns that combine a metal base with a porcelain coating, zirconia is milled from a single solid block of ceramic using CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) technology. After shaping, the crown is hardened in a high-heat oven to strengthen it. It is then stained to color match your natural teeth.
The Dental Crown Procedure
1.EXAMINATION AND TREATMENT PLANNING
A thorough examination (including x-rays) and consultation are necessary before the procedure to determine the patient's oral health and suitability for a dental crown. This includes assessing the health of the tooth structure and discussing crown types and materials. The treatment process requires two or more visits.
2. PREPARATION
After the exam, your dentist will prepare the affected tooth for crown preparation. The affected tooth and the surrounding area will be numbed with local anesthesia for your comfort. While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. Next, a digital scan is completed which will be sent to the dental lab where the crown will be fabricated. In addition, a temporary crown will be made and worn for about 3 weeks until your next appointment.
3. Crown DELIVERY
At the second visit, it involves removing the temporary crown and the permanent crown will be carefully checked, adjusted, and cemented to achieve a proper fit. You will receive care instructions at the conclusion of your treatment. Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new permanent crown.
